There are so many factors to consider when planning a wedding, from music and food to guest lists and dresses. Follow these tips to help you stay organized and on track for your special day!

1. Get a Rough Guest Count First

Before you choose a venue, sit down and get a rough count of the approximate number of guests you plan to invite.
You want to make sure there will be enough space for dinner, dancing, as well as your caterers, DJ, and other staff. It is recommended that you allow for 25 to 30 square feet per guest. Mitzvahs are not only a critical come of age ceremony, but it is also a joyous celebration with singing, dancing, and delicious food! At Entertainment Unlimited we asked our Pittsburgh DJ’ s to describe the most memorable mitzvahs they have ever worked.

DJ Sosa, who has been the DJ at multiple mitzvahs, said he has done a few mitzvahs at the Children Museum’s Garage Room. “The room itself is a dome-shaped room, so a lot of the time we project the video montage right on the white done ceiling. It’s just a cool area has a lot of cool things already there,” Sosa said.

He with a lot of space for kids and families to participate in activities, venues like the Children’s museum and the Carnegie Science museum serve a cool backdrop for events like mitzvahs.

He said he once did a mitzvah at Southpointe, where the kids, rather than being shy, were the dancing type. “They rocked out the entire time. 30 or 40 of them didn’t leave the dance floor the entire night” Sosa said.

He said he enjoyed doing all the hip new dances with the crowd such as the JuJu.

Sosa said he strives to stay in tune and up to date with pop culture. “13-year-olds tend to know more about pop culture, so that’s important for me to stay hip and stay relevant as part of making the connection with them,” Sosa said.

DJ Jet said he was the DJ at a bat mitzvah where he used an idea he had used at other mitzvahs to have a Hollywood-style entrance for the family and friends using a red carpet. “The night just started off with a bang,” Jet said.

Extravagant Weddings and Memorable Venues

DJ Sosa said he has worked some very expensive, over the top weddings that stand out due to the spending such as a big wedding he did at the Fairmont with flowers, chandeliers, and a marble dance floor. “They were memorable just because of the spending,” Sosa said.

Sosa also said he has DJed for many same-sex weddings. Sosa said he DJed one of the first same-sex marriages before it was recognized in PA at the South Park Recreation Hall.

Other memorable weddings for Sosa include one held on the Rooftop at Hotel Monaco and one at the Heinz History Center.

Lively Crowd that was Ready to Dance All Night

DJ Jet (Jesse) recalled a wedding where he said the bridal party came out to the dance floor to “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble,” waving their Terrible Towels. “It was hyped up from the very beginning,” Jesse said. He said from the start it was “go time.”

He said they also had a wide variety of music and the guests danced to everything. He said the music went from Oldies and R&B to swing dancing and techno. “It was just one of those things were different age groups were all dancing to everything,” Jesse said.

He said they had a big circle on the dance floor, with Jesse stepping in first to break the ice and get people to take turns dancing. “People were covered in sweat by the end of the night. I myself had a great time,” Jesse said.

7-Hour Open Bar for an Extraordinary Evening

DJ Scott said the most memorable weddings are where the debauchery comes into play. Scott said he did a 7-hour wedding where the open bar was available for the entire 7 hours of the event. He said by cocktail hour one of the mothers, either the bride’s or the groom’s was dancing on the table. “This was when I knew it was going to be a fun and crazy, wild wedding” Scott said.

He said the evening ended with them shaking beer bottles and covering the bride in beer and with the groom singing from the balcony and dangling from the balcony. Scott said although this frightened him and other guests, no one was injured.

Scott said it was an expensive and beautiful wedding. “That was an extraordinary sight to see. They sure had fun,” Scott said.

Music is an important part of your wedding from the ceremony to dinner to your first dance as a married couple. We have asked our DJs what their favorite songs are and which ones they think work best to get people out on the floor and dancing all night long!

“We’re seeing a tremendous choice in every aspect of a wedding. That’s the biggest thing that has happened in weddings. It makes for a very exciting time for brides and grooms. That’s the most exciting part of the wedding,” said DJ Scott Alexander. Alexander said with new music being released every year there are always emerging songs you need to know that are unique and specials to couples. “I love new music so much. It changes every year with new waves of songs,” he said.

Alexander said current songs that speak to couples include “Millionaire” by Chris Stapleton and “Speechless” by Dan & Shay. He said favorite first dance songs continue to vary because brides and grooms always have access to new music. He said some common choices include “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole, which Alexander said is a universally a beautiful love song. “Somewhere over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole and “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong are other good standard choices.

DJ Jet (Jesse) said “Come away with me” by Norah Jones is a good choice for a slow first dance song. He said other popular choices include “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Hailee Steinfeld, “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, and “You Make it Easy” by Jason Aldean. Jet said these songs do a great job appealing to a large audience.

DJ Sosa said some of the favorite first dance songs he commonly plays include “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, “Holy” by Florida Georgia Line, “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Ingrid Michelson.

Father and Bride Dance Songs

DJ Scott Alexander said a most common father and bride dance song that is requested is “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle. “Daddy’s Little Girl” by T. Carter is one that DJ Jet said people like a lot even though the artist isn’t widely popular. “Daddy’s Little Girl” by The Shires is a country song that DJ Jet said is currently popular for father and bride dances. DJ Sosa said one very commonly requested father and bride song is “Wish” by Rascal Flatts.

Mother and Groom Dance Songs

DJ Scott Alexander said songs like “I Hope You Dance” Lee Ann Womack are popular for mother and groom dances. He said in many cases it is easier to find a song more easily for a father and bride dance than a mother and groom dance.

DJ Jet (Jesse) said the favorite mother and groom songs include “A Song For My Son” by Mikki Viereck, “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, and “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw.

“A Song for Mama” by Boyz to Men is a song that DJ Sosa said is a favorite for the mother and groom dance.

Chicken Dance: Is it a Do or a Don’t?

DJ Scott Alexander said the chicken dance is a song he rarely plays. “It’s usually when there are children in attendance. I would say that some of those types of songs that used to be absolutely standard at weddings have kind of grown tired. Same with a polka,” Alexander said. He said he plays these types of songs when children are involved, and there is a reason for something fun and silly.

DJ Jet said that there is nothing wrong with playing the chicken dance at your wedding. He said it’s one he plays if there is a younger crowd. “That’s one that gets all age groups on the dance floor. It just depends on what kind of crowd you’re dealing with” Jet said.

DJ Sosa said that it’s been a long time since he has played the chicken dance at a wedding. He said it only gets requested about 2% of the time, but other songs such as the Cupid Shuffle, Cha-Cha Slide, and the Electric Slide are still played.

Best Songs for Getting Your Guests Out on the Dance Floor

DJ Scott Alexander said he starts with songs such as “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison and “Love Shack” by B52s. He also said line dances are a popular choice, and they always work to get people out on the dance floor, but the Electric Slide is not as popular anymore. Alexander said “Celebration” by Kool & The Gang is a song that is overplayed.

DJ Jet Best said songs such as “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson, “Push It” by Salt n’ Pepper, and “Now that We Found Love” by Heavy D & The Boyz are great for getting people moving. He said a song that takes things to the next level is “Gonna Make You Sweat” by C+C Music Factory. He said more modern hits that are popular with crowds include “Timber” by Pitbull, “Starships” by Nikki Minaj and “House Party” by Sam Hunt. DJ Jet said other popular dance songs such as “Hot Hot Hot by Buster Poindexter can get a conga line going.

DJ Sosa said to get things started he play popular hits such as “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars or “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars, “Shut up and Dance” by Walk the Moon, “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire, “Brick House” by The Commodores, and “Do You Love Me” by The Contours. He said he ends every event the same way, with the popular hit “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, unless something else is requested.

Top Slow Dance Songs

DJ Scott Alexander said there are a handful of slow songs he plays that always work to get couples out on the floor. According to Alexander “At Last” by Etta James is the top song for a slow dance at a wedding. He said songs such as “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts, “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole, “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and “All of Me” by John Legend are also great slow dance songs for a wedding.

DJ Jet said “Then” by Brad Paisley, “What a Wonderful World Mix” by Kenny G and Louis Armstrong, “All of Me” by John Legend and “To Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan are all great slow dance songs. He said the best slow dance songs depends on the crowd.

Have you secured a DJ for your upcoming wedding ? Have you interviewed candidates? Here are seven important questions you’ll want answers to before you sign on the dotted line.

1. What are some of your favorite events you’ve worked?

This is a great opener because it does a couple of things. First, it gives you a chance to see the personality of the DJ you are hiring, who may very well be the person who sets the tone of the event as MC. Also, it gives you an indication of the DJ’s experience and at various venues and with mixed-age crowds. But it also allows you to see if this person loves their job because that’s something that will come through the day of your event.

2. Have you ever worked at the venue we’ve reserved?

Your candidate may have insight on parking, acoustics, equipment needs, lighting, linens. Are they providing linens or are you? Is there an extra fee if they provide them? A professional should be able to work any size or venue and know what extras are needed, but it’s good to know going in what everything will cost you so there are no surprises.

3. What do you see as your role?

Grinch Popcorn

Melt the 3 tbsp butter in a medium pan. When butter is melted, add mini marshmallows. Remove from heat & add a few drops yellow food coloring, mix until mixture is bright yellow. Then add in 1 very small drop of the blue food coloring and stir. This will allow you to get the perfect green color for your Grinch Popcorn.

Slowly pour marshmallow mixture over the popcorn, and stir gently with a spoon until it is covered. Once it’s covered, pour it onto a foil-covered cookie sheet, and drizzle lightly with remaining marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle candy and the 1/2 c. mini marshmallows while the mixture is sticky. Then serve!

Turn pimiento cheese into tiny truffles for your next holiday gathering!

Roll the cheese into 3/4 inch balls. Once they have been formed, roll to coat in your choice of the parsley, bacon, or chopped pecans.

Holiday Pizza Wreath

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Shape pizza crust dough into large ball, let it rest 5 min., then roll it into a large circle. Slice cheese sticks in half lengthwise and place around edges. Roll edges over the cheese & pinch the dough together.

With a 4 1/2 in. circle cookie cutter, cut a circle from the middle of the dough. Spread pizza with sauce and sprinkle with cheese. Add arugula and diced peppers. Sprinkle with more cheese & add salami. Bake 25 min. or until cheese is melted.

A Night of Success

It was truly a night of magic! On Saturday, March 5, 120 companies, Entertainment Unlimited among them, donated nearly $250,000 of products and services to create the highly anticipated Forces of Nature: Color Our World.

In an elegant and colorful setting at Pittsburgh’s Bakery Square, close to 650 guests came together to benefit Event Pros Take Action, a charitable organization formed five years ago by professional event organizers to help rebuild communities that have suffered from environmental catastrophe, such as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Turning a blank canvas into a stunning kaleidoscope of color, Pittsburgh-area event planners made for a magical evening, where guests dined and danced to a display of eye candy in jaw-dropping color. The staff at Entertainment Unlimited were on hand to enjoy the festivities, supplying wildly popular local acts such as PJ the DJ and the Move Makers band.

When asked to be a part of a Fundraising Event designed to help rebuild communities who have suffered from environmental catastrophe, Entertainment Unlimited was excited and pleased to be included. The first Forces of Nature Fundraiser in 2013 by Pittsburgh Entertainment Industry Professionals was a huge success, recognized in the International Special Events Industry. The evening benefits Event Pros Take Action (EPTA), a group of event professionals from North America whose goal is to help rebuild communities that have suffered from environmental catastrophe. To date, EPTA has traveled to NOLA five times, Rockaway Peninsula twice, and San Marcos, Texas to help out.

This year’s event will light up Pittsburgh in a spectrum of vibrant color with the theme “Color Our World.” Taking place on Saturday, March 5 at Bakery 2.0, guests are encouraged to wear their brightest cocktail attire and, with a palette of colors for designers to draw upon, attendees will be swept away in a world of color while they sample cuisine from local chefs and caterers.
